RIB & Boating Gear

Firefly
After I stopped working on the trawlers to start my PhD, it didn't take long for me to really miss being at sea on a regular basis and I started looking for a powerboat which I could use for diving and a bit of wildlife photography around the coast. After much looking and a bit of luck, I finally found a second hand (modified) Avon 5.4m Searider with a 90HP Yamaha outboard which was pretty much what we were looking for.

Firefly at anchor in Loch Carron

As with all RIBs, it requires a fair amount of TLC and general looking-after, but it will carry 6-7 divers quite comfortably and provides a comfy ride even in pretty nasty weather! When we bought the boat it was named 'Aqua Legends II' or something similar, but we thought something a bit more geeky and a bit more sci-fi was in order and we changed the name to Firefly.

Inside is a bit of a squeeze, but good enough for 6 divers & kit. Oh, and it's very blue.
